Strathclyde Windscreens thought we’d feature Falkirk this week as we continue our blogs focusing some of the areas that Strathclyde covers.

Falkirk

One of the newer towns compared to some that we have blogged about recently, with earliest signs of inhabitation dating back to the Roman occupation. Falkirk has some of the best archaeological evidence of the Romans in Scotland  from when there was a garrison stationed here at the Antonine Wall (like Hadrian’s Wall but made of mud).

The next phase of Falkirk was a medieval church built around the 7th century. It was a speckled church apparently and this is where Falkirk derives its name (“faw kirk” means a patchy church in old Scots). The site of the original medieval church is now under Falkirk Old Parish Church (Falkirk Trinity).

Of course, Falkirk is perhaps most famous for being the battle 1298 site, where William Wallace was defeated by the English King Edward I (boo hiss) during the Scottish Wars of Independence and gave up his title of Guardian of Scotland.

Like many places across Scotland with good access to water, Falkirk boomed during the Industrial Revolution, and some of the parts of the first steam engine, built by James Watt, were actually manufactured at the old Carron Iron Works, which used to sit on the banks of the River Carron. Falkirk is also known for its prominence in canal building, which was an extremely significant mode of transport in the 18th and 19th centuries and in 2002, the Falkirk Wheel was opened to link up the Union and and Forth and Clyde Canals by lifting and rotating up boats. Falkirk was also the first place in the UK to have fully automated electric street lighting!

We’ve not been offering windscreen services in Falkirk quite as far back as some of its local history, but after 30 years repairing and replacing chipped and cracked windscreens in the Forth Valley, we feel pretty well established!
