Here at Strathclyde Windscreens we want you to stay safe this winter, so here are a few maintenance tips for your car.

Things to check;

Car battery

Older batteries can struggle in winter. The cold itself can drain the battery, but the additional uses of heaters and electrical devices can too. If you are having trouble starting your car on cold morning, it could be a sign that your battery is on the way out. Battery prices are around £60-100 fitted, so definitely worth replacing if there is a chance you could get stranded in very cold weather. And remember if you can’t start your car, but have a set of jump leads and someone to let you use the 12-volt power supply in their car, then you can start your car with some help.

Antifreeze

It’s an especially good idea to check and top up your antifreeze, after all it is designed to stop the water in the engine’s cooling system freezing up.

Screen wash

Our cars and windscreens can get filthy in winter. Popping in some screen wash can help stop your wipers smearing more dirt over your windscreen, decreasing visibility. Screen wash also doesn’t freeze as easily as water so can often help defrost iced up windscreens. The windscreen bottle is easily accessible under the bonnet and it’s an easy DIY job.

Lights

Like your battery, your lights will also get more use in the winter months as it’s much darker. Make sure they are all working and not obscured by dirt and mud.

Windscreens

Remember that your windscreens are more prone to damage in winter. You can put a cover on your car/windscreen to try and protect it overnight and you can also spray the windows with a vinegar/water solution which will help stop glass icing up. If you do get a crack or chip in winter, it’s likely to deteriorate more quickly too so make sure you have Strathclyde Windscreens number stored. Our phone lines are open 24/7 365 days a year. Or you can just pop in. We are always happy to repair, replace or even just advise.
