Over the last thirty years, replacing or repairing windscreens has required us to visit every city, town and village across Strathclyde, so we thought we’d share a few snippets about some of the places we visit. This week we’d like to mention Hamilton.

Hamilton

The naming of Hamilton comes with a riveting tale of complicated loyalties and switching sides. Originally, Hamilton was called Cadzow (pronounced Cadyou) but during the Wars of Scottish Independence the head of the Hamilton family abandoned the English after Robert the Bruce won at Bannockburn and became a Scots loyalist…he also handed back Bothwell Castle to Scottish control. The Hamiltons were then rewarded with lands that included Cadzow. A later descendant, named Lord James Hamilton went on to marry Princess Mary, the eldest daughter of James II and it was then that the town was given its new name. The family then went about building some rather fancy landmarks across Strathclyde including Hamilton Palace. Which, was the largest and grandest non-royal palace in the western world, until it was demolished due to dodgy foundations in 1921. Even now, Hamilton still has its posh bits and another fancy looking building is Hamilton Mausoleum, which boasts the longest echo in the world! Random, but true!

If our mobile fitters are out working in Hamilton, they like to eat Italian either at Gusti or Leonardo’s but if they’re not going all the way in to town, they recommend John Carrigan’s for a slap up steak dinner.
