Greenock
Well the first thing to ask is, was Greenock named for a green oak or not? This is certainly one of the folks stories ascribed to the place and believed by many. You will see images and names all over Greenock relating to oak trees. But the truth is, no one knows and will likely ever know so it will remain a mystery!
What we do know though, is that in the 15th century, Greenock was nothing more than a tiny fishing village with a few thatched cottages but by the 18th century had become a major port in Scotland (the first dock on the Clyde). A hive of industry for two centuries and birthplace of the father of the steam engine and famous industrial revolutionist, James Watt, Greenock grew rapidly and has continued to thrive post the industrial age. There are many stunning Victorian buildings all over Greenock and you can explore the significance it played in Scotland’s history at the Custom House Museum.
