The month is nearly over and this July will be remembered as one of the hottest on record! The “weatherproof” membrane on the Glasgow Science Centre roof even melted and there was a bit of confusion about whether Strathclyde Park in Motherwell achieved the hottest day ever recorded in Scotland at a whopping 33.2 degrees. In 2003  we had a scorcher when the record was set at Greycook for a recorded temperature of 32.9 C but this year meteorologists are predicting that we might have the hottest summer since 1976… which made famous for being so hot you could fry an egg on your car bonnet.

Alas, it’s not all icecreams and suntans! Research done this month by 1st Central suggest that there are 4.4 million drivers across the UK not taking sufficient precautions for the dangers posed by driving in extreme heat.

So here are a few safety tips;

  • Make sure you have a pair of sunglasses to help you cope with glare on the road and sun blindness.
  • Always carry water in your car so you don’t dehydrate.
  • Remember that you car can dehydrate too, so make sure your car fluids are all kept topped up and check your tyres for baldness.
  • Don’t leave pets and children in hot cars!
  • Think about putting a cover on your windscreen to deflect the worst of the sun’s rays. This will not only help the inside of your car remain cooler but will also help to protect your windscreen from heated related stress fractures and cracks.
  • If you have all your windows open, remember that you can still suffer sunburn, especially your arm and shoulders nearest the open window. So wear sunscreen!
