What sort of windscreen damage should I worry about?

This is another question we hear from our customers regularly.

There are actually several different types of windscreen damage, and some require more urgent attention than others, so here are some descriptions to help you identify what damage your glass has incurred;

Crack Chip – This will appear on your windscreen as a small crack where there has been an impact and usually about the size of a coin. And is usually an easy enough repair.

Ding/Chip/Stone – The most common type of windscreen damage and generally caused when a stone bounces up off the road and strikes the glass while driving. A small piece of glass, actually gets knocked out of the windscreen in this type of incident. However, the damage can often still be repaired safely (known as a chip repair). A chip break will deteriorate if left, so you do want to get a repair from Strathclyde Windscreens sooner rather than later.

Bull’s Eye – (pictured) This is the same as above but bigger, circular and often with cracks radiating out. Repair depends on the size of the damage, sometimes the whole windscreen needs to be replaced.

Combo Break- A mixture of different types of damage. It will require urgent assessment to prevent quick deterioration, but depending on the damage, can often be a repair job, rather than full replacement.

Stress Crack – Over time your screen looses strength, usually because of fluctuations in temperature and then a stress crack can appear. Sometimes this can be repaired, however, often there are signs that the whole window strength has been compromised and a replacement is required.

Float Crack – This crack starts in the center of the windscreen. Again, the extent of the crack (depth/size etc) will determine if this requires a repair or replacement.

Edge Crack – A crack that starts at the edge of your windscreen. And a replacement is usually required.

At Strathclyde Windscreens we are happy to help no matter how big or small the job!
